Have you ever felt like most of the emerging technology or AI tools didn’t live up to their hype? Turns out that it’s a common experience to get your hopes up for a new application or software, only to find that it doesn’t live up to the marketing descriptions despite investing time and probably money into it.

Since 2023, new AI tools have surged, but some have left many users feeling underwhelmed. I had to conduct a quick poll on my personal social media accounts to verify that I wasn’t alone and to see how common this was. The results showed that many users were unsatisfied with new technology, with a significant portion saying that it rarely lives up to the hype.

What do the latest data reveal about how people view the performance of new tools?

I did more research and found a couple of data like Retool, which also recently released a report called The State of AI 2023. It discusses how generative AI affects job roles and how companies adopt AI. Interestingly, although LLMs like ChatGPT are becoming more popular, over half of the respondents (51.6%) still think that AI is overrated.

And according to another survey by Stack Overflow, 81% of developers believe that nascent technologies are overhyped.

DesignerGPT: A Game-Changing Plugin?

One such fledgling technology is DesignerGPT, a plugin that allows users to create websites directly in the ChatGPT interface. The tool promises to generate text and images quickly and easily, making website creation a breeze.

However, there have been mixed reviews regarding the tool. Some users are concerned about the reliability of Generative Artificial Intelligence, which can create results that are different from what the user intended. Others have criticized the tool for its limited capabilities and lack of responsiveness.

It’s important to remember that DesignerGPT is still in its early stages of development, and how well it will perform in the long run is still being determined.

Overhyping new technologies is a common problem, and many new tools and technologies are marketed as solutions to all problems, but the reality is often more complex.

While it’s worth keeping an eye on DesignerGPT and similar tools to see how they develop, we should continue to rely on established tools like WordPress, which is currently the most popular content management system, with a market share of 40.5%, according to W3Techs. This is followed by Shopify, Joomla, and Drupal.

Learning from Recent Examples: Google Gemini’s Misstep

Another recent example was last week when Google had to halt Gemini’s image generation feature after people noticed that it was producing images of racially diverse Nazi-era German soldiers and non-white US Founding Fathers and even incorrectly depicting Google’s co-founders.

Google has apologized for the error and acknowledged that it missed the mark. In a memo released last Tuesday, the CEO of Google addressed the incident publicly for the first time and stated that the AI diversity errors demonstrated by Gemini were “completely unacceptable.” The company is now working to rectify the issue and plans to re-enable image generation in the coming weeks.

Key Takeaways

Coming across cutting-edge tools and technologies to help us grow and improve is always exciting. However, we should also remember the value of reliable and practical tools we already have. Before jumping on the bandwagon of the latest and greatest, it’s essential to review them carefully and determine if they are the right fit for our needs.

With new AI tools being released almost every week, keeping an eye on them is vital to stay ahead of the curve. Doing so allows us to take advantage of new opportunities as they arise.

See, the problem with generative AI (at the moment) is that it just creates whatever it wants. and people act like that’s what they envisioned and actually wanted. But let’s be honest, the results (even after 30 prompt tweaks) are never what you really wanted. And this video is another example of that.”

tHiS iS gOiNg tO kILl WeB dEsIgNeRs!” 🤣

One thing I don’t like about AI is that it doesn’t fix its mistakes. You say, “Hey, you did this specific part wrong, can you adjust it?” The AI is like, “lol, what?” Then it recreates the whole thing all over again, and it does something else entirely different and still broken in another way.

Beautiful website” = a static HTML file that looks like a website from the 90’s. I mean, it’s cool and all, and I understand it’s the very early days of this, but I don’t see a reason to overhype a fledgling technology. In time, it will get to the point where it can make impressive websites; until then, it’s just a neat novelty.”

First off, is it responsive? The site looks like a very basic markup. There’s a lot more that goes into web development than just writing HTML and CSS. I can see this being useful for proof of concept or quickly mocking up designs and then taking that and rolling with it. Either way, pretty cool stuff.”

RIP Software and Program engineers 😂”
