🌍 Skills: A Top Priority for the Future By Mia Seppo, Deputy Director-General for Employment and Social Protection at the ILO. The world of work is changing faster than ever, driven by digital, ecological, and demographic transformations. While new opportunities are emerging in cybersecurity, AI, and data science, a growing skills gap could slow progress and hinder business competitiveness. According to the World Economic Forum, 65% of children today will work in jobs that do not yet exist. Unfortunately, current education systems are not fully equipped to anticipate the skills needed for these emerging roles. This mismatch between training programs and market needs calls for urgent action. At the ILO, we believe investing in skills is the key to turning these challenges into opportunities. We must invest in training, reskilling, and adapting educational systems to meet the demands of tomorrow's workforce. This is not just about technical skills—it’s also about developing soft skills like adaptability and collaboration. In Switzerland, the apprenticeship model has proven highly effective in equipping the workforce with the skills needed to meet industry demands. The ILO’s "Skills and Lifelong Learning 2030" strategy is helping countries adapt their education systems to ensure no one is left behind in the face of digital, green, and demographic transitions. By prioritizing inclusive and future-oriented training, we can ensure that every worker, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to participate fully in the economy. Together, we can build a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for all.
